For my techtask for this week I ‘played around’ on the espresso coding site. To be honest I was pretty nervous about this techtask- I’ve never tried coding and have actively avoided it in fact! However, once I got to the site my fears subsided- the site was kid-friendly and fun. I decided I would start with Unit 1a, to make sure I had the basics down.
This site did a great job really breaking down each step of the process. At the beginning of each lesson there was a short video which demonstrates how to do the activities expected in each lesson. Then there is pop-up bubbles which remind of each step.
The controls are very easy to use as well. The lessons are broken down so that they follow a very easy to understand progression (simply adding an extra movement option or an extra object to move).
It was a bunch of fun and I would definitely recommend it! I think it is a great tool for getting students comfortable with technology, since it is set up in such a user friendly manner. This is the third lesson in the unit: I got to play with emergency vehicles!
I’m not sure exactly how I would use this in a classroom- but I can see the benefit in allow for creativity and independence for students who use this program. Have any suggestions for how to use this in a classroom setting?
